Decision Making in Health and Medicine: Integrating Evidence and Values, M. G. Myriam Hunink

Decision making in health care means navigating through a complex and tangled web of diagnostic and therapeutic uncertainties, patient preferences and values, and costs. In addition, medical therapies may include side effects, surgery may lead to undesirable complications, and diagnostic technologies may produce inconclusive results. In many clinical and health policy decisions it is necessary to counterbalance benefits and risks, and to trade off competing objectives such as maximizing life expectancy vs optimizing quality of life vs minimizing the required resources. This textbook plots a clear course through these complex and conflicting variables. It clearly explains and illustrates tools for integrating quantitative evidence-based data and subjective outcome values in making clinical and health policy decisions. An accompanying CD-ROM features solutions to the exercises, PowerPoint® presentations of the illustrations, and sample models and tables.

It is very readable, making a complex subject appear crystal clear and easy to understand. The exercises at the end of each chapter provide a useful check of understanding and examples of how to apply the skills...Overall, this book is a very useful addition to the literature on evidence-based health care, providing clear strategies for incorporating decision analysis into our daily decision making. This is an impressively comprehensive approach to clinical decision-making with every angle considered, advantages and disadvantages tabulated. The book is extremely well supported by exercises and the accompanying CD , and was well liked by our students...The book could also be a useful stepping stone to more advanced techniques in modeling or diagnostic test research but does not go into sufficient detail in the application of advanced tools such as Monte Carlo simulation to be used in isolation.

Surgical Complications in Oral Implantology: Etiology, Prevention, and Management 1st Edition, Louie Al-Faraje

This exceptional new book is designed as a self-instruction guide to the diagnosis, management, and prevention of surgery-related complications in implant dentistry. It functions in two ways: First, it is a valuable resource for the implant surgeon seeking practical and succinct information about how to manage a complication in an emergency setting; and second, it can be read from cover to cover as a primer on implant surgery, from the initial consultation and treatment planning through the restorative phase of treatment. Besides addressing pre-, intra-, and postoperative implant surgery complications, the book also includes a comprehensive treatment-planning protocol that allows for the early detection of potential surgical complications and how to avoid them. Early detection of complications that are amenable to rescue therapies may reverse the fate of a failing implant or a bone-grafting procedure. Invaluable for the novice and experienced implant surgeon alike.

Dr Al-Faraje did an excellent job with this book ! I had some pretty comprehensive implant training, and I was getting this book solely to fill in the gaps in the event of a complication pre- or post surgery. This book does that part well. What I didn't expect was the overall review of proper surgical techniques and anatomy that you get as well. It is full of practical advice and guidelines that help in planning surgeries. A good buy for this type of book.

Medical Emergencies in the Dental Office 6th Edition, Stanley F. Malamed DDS

This full-color text prepares dental professionals to promptly and proactively recognize and manage medical emergencies that may occur in the dental office. It details how to anticipate potential emergencies and what resources must be on hand to deal effectively with these situations. The book is arranged in eight sections concentrating on topics such as prevention of emergencies through patient evaluation (medical history) and specific types of more common emergencies that practitioners may encounter.

This is a comprehensive book of medical emergencies seen by dental professionals. This is the fourth edition; the third was published in 1987. The purpose is to stimulate dental professionals to better manage medical emergencies. This book would be ideal as the textbook for a course or continuing education seminar in medical emergencies; it would be a valuable office reference as well. The stated audience is any person in the dental team providing patient care. The book is more appropriate for the dentist or dental student. Stanley Malamed, author of the three previous editions, is considered the leading authority on this subject. This well-organized, usable reference book is organized according to clinical symptoms, and flow sheets are used to emphasize this approach. Many of the tables could be used on a daily basis in the dental office. The author has continued to use up-to-date references and tables. Billed as a chairside reference, it would best be used as a textbook for a course on medical emergencies. The author continues to keep one of the best textbooks in clinical dentistry current and extremely usable. This is a must-have book for all dental practitioners.

This is the definitive textbook on medical emergencies in the dental office.

Dentists do not get a comprehensive medical education simply because there is no time for such a detailed education in the 4+ years of dental school. This book fills in the gap for the dental practitioner. The book is organized in such a fashion so that the dental staff learns to recognize a dental emergency early, and then according to specific algorithms, the appropriate treatment is rendered (until emergency staff arrives). Keeping the patient alive until emergency care arrives is the primary duty of the dental staff. Too many dentists buy an emergency kit full of emergency drugs (that they don't perhaps know how to use properly), yet somehow feel they are covered from liability. Having an emergency kit and not knowing how to use it actually creates more liability for the dental office.

This is a book that every dental professional should examine page by page from cover to cover until a firm understanding of recognizing medical emergencies is ingrained. I bought this copy so that I could review it each year, as one loses knowledge that is not used. Since medical emergencies (thankfully) do not happen each week or month, knowledge of medical emergency treatment slowly slips away like a leaky sieve. It has to be bolstered regularly, and fortunately, this is the book that the dental professional can rely upon to recognize dental/medical emergencies, and then render appropriate treatment. Once mastered, this book'sinformation will give the dentist and his/her staff confidence in treating virtually all medical emergencies that could happen in the dental environment. Dr. Stanley Malamed is the authority in this field, and his book is an absolute essential for every dental office. Better to have this book than a kit full of emergency medications!

Travell and Simons' Trigger Point Flip Charts 1st Edition, Janet Travell

Volumes 1 and 2 of Drs. Travell and Simons' Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction: The Trigger Point Manual have been hailed as the definitive references on myofascial pain and locating trigger points. Now all the upper and lower extremity pain patterns and their corresponding trigger points are clearly illustrated on convenient flip charts, ideal for patient education.

The trigger point spiral bound charts have the same diagrams of trigger points and referred pain patterns as the Travell & Simons 2 volume set, Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction: The Trigger Point Manual -- Volumes 1 and 2. They are grouped by major body sections for quick review and have references to the more detailed information in the manuals for ease in looking up additional information. They can be set up in an examination/treatment room to use for explanations to a client or for quick reference by the practioner. No need to fumble through pages of the manuals to find trigger points or referred pain locations, just turn to the chart page for the specific section of the body that the pain is located in and there is the necessary information. Because of their portability these are a great reference for therapists who travel off sight or instructors teaching in assorted locations. An excellent compliment to the 2 volume set.

The charts are extremely well done. They have a collapsible tripod base for easy reference as you work your trigger points. Although the price seemed a little steep, it was worth every penny. The charts are somewhat waterproofed, seemingly covered with a thin plastic coating-able to withstand splashes and be wiped clean...not able to withstand being soaked in water. I highly recommend them. They should not, however, be used as an alternative to a professional massage therapist or chiropractor.

Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction: The Trigger Point Manual; Vol. 1. The Upper Half of Body 2nd Edition, David G. Simons

This Second Edition presents introductory general information on all trigger points and also detailed descriptions of single muscle syndromes for the upper half of the body. It includes 107 new drawings, a number of trigger point release techniques in addition to spray and stretch, and a new chapter on intercostal muscles and diaphragm.

Updates the 1983 edition to mark the transition of the trigger point concept from a syndrome of unknown etiology to an experimentally established neuromuscular disease entity. Also addresses the close interaction between myofascial trigger points and articular dysfunctions at nearly every point examined. Covers pain in the head and neck; upper back, shoulder, and arms; forearms and hands; and torso. Assumes readers to be health care professionals or students who are well trained, or intend to be, in muscle anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, necessary palpitation skills, and recognizing and resolving perpetuating factors.

The relationship of Myfacial pain and Fibromisyalgia are confusing to many medical providers. This book explains the relationship in great detail. Though there are some errors in the book, the pages listing Quadratus Lamborum could not be found in the upper extremity book. The Technique to avoid pneumothorax is excellent. That alone will avoid a lot of headaces. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ALL PRACTIONERS.

Peterson's Principles of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery 3rd Edition, Michael Miloro

Peterson's Principles of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery third edition, encompasses a wide range of diverse topics making it a unique text amongst the medical and dental specialties. The purpose of this concise, easy-to-read two-volume text is to provide an authoritative and currently referenced survey of the specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. It contains the necessary information for clinicians and is an ideal reference text for preparation for board certification in the specialty.

I purchased this book as soon as it was released and was very happy with the purchase. I used the 2nd edition of Peterson's almost daily during my residency and this edition is an improvement on an already excellent text. It is now full color and some of the chapters (TMJ) that I didnt like in the 2nd edition have been re-written by new authors. I would recommend this text for all residents, especially those early on in residency. Its a great text to read every night. I am no longer in residency but find this book to be useful whenever I have a clinical question I want to lookup and read more about. I also have some other texts, a single volume and a three volume series, and find this two volume series to be my go-to text.

Netter's Head and Neck Anatomy for Dentistry 2nd Edition, Neil S. Norton PhD

Netter’s Head and Neck Anatomy for Dentistry, by Neil S. Norton, PhD, uses more than 600 full-color images from the Netter Collection to richly depict all of the key anatomy that’s relevant to clinical practice. This new edition takes your knowledge further than ever with more Netter illustrations; addition of over 20 cone beam CT images; new chapters on the upper limbs, thorax, and abdomen; and more than 100 multiple-choice questions. Whether for your dental anatomy course, board review, or as a handy reference in your dental office, this concise, visual guide is an excellent anatomy atlas and quick reference for students and professionals in dentistry and dental hygiene.

While providing readers with important images from the Netter Collection, the book supplements the art with important factual information teaching and explaining anatomic details. It marries form with function. While not at the level of a complete anatomy textbook, this serves as a worthy primary source for students, and would also be an excellent resource in the dissection laboratory. The additional factual information is concise, complete, and easily accessible. Of particular excellence is the clinical correlation section found at the end of each regionally organized chapter. The images (many clinical) here are very helpful and assist students in solidifying the anatomic concepts. It provides a memorable schema for the student to frame information. If there is any glaring shortcoming, it would likely be the compact size of the book. With all the outlines and tables, this book would be a bit less crowded given more space.

This is an excellent resource for dental students. Since students are typically required to purchase an anatomy atlas, this seems like a good all-around resource. It is packed with useful information, and has excellent corresponding images. The clinical correlations help with the mastery of complex material, and will likely be a useful resource for many years following graduation. I highly recommend it, and will be steering my dental students toward it.

Fundamentals of Periodontal Instrumentation and Advanced Root Instrumentation 7th Edition, Jill S Nield-Gehrig RDH MA

The seventh edition of Peridontal Instrumentationand Advanced Root Instrumentation continues in the tradition of bringing faculty and students everything they need to understand instrumentation and put knowledge into practice. Taking a highly visual, step-by-step approach, this title is an easy-to-use guide to learning this crucial component of dental hygiene. No other text offers such an array of features and topics, all presented by one of the most well-known authors in the dental hygiene field.

This new edition combines a focus on currency, with updated content to reflect new technologies and regulations in this field, as well as coupling the text with the robust and valuable ancillaries you have come to expect from Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins' dental hygiene products.

It has alot of great information in it. It takes you through all of your instruments step by step. For some parts it has a right and left handers section. Being left-handed, this is great for me. However, I would not say I'm hard on my books, but because this is spiral bound, no matter how hard I try pages keep getting partly torn out and the cover is bent up terrible. I bought it brand new, have had it one semester, and it is decrepit. For such a large book, I wish they would have come up with a much better way to bind it.
