Decision Making in Health and Medicine: Integrating Evidence and Values, M. G. Myriam Hunink

Decision making in health care means navigating through a complex and tangled web of diagnostic and therapeutic uncertainties, patient preferences and values, and costs. In addition, medical therapies may include side effects, surgery may lead to undesirable complications, and diagnostic technologies may produce inconclusive results. In many clinical and health policy decisions it is necessary to counterbalance benefits and risks, and to trade off competing objectives such as maximizing life expectancy vs optimizing quality of life vs minimizing the required resources. This textbook plots a clear course through these complex and conflicting variables. It clearly explains and illustrates tools for integrating quantitative evidence-based data and subjective outcome values in making clinical and health policy decisions. An accompanying CD-ROM features solutions to the exercises, PowerPoint® presentations of the illustrations, and sample models and tables.

It is very readable, making a complex subject appear crystal clear and easy to understand. The exercises at the end of each chapter provide a useful check of understanding and examples of how to apply the skills...Overall, this book is a very useful addition to the literature on evidence-based health care, providing clear strategies for incorporating decision analysis into our daily decision making. This is an impressively comprehensive approach to clinical decision-making with every angle considered, advantages and disadvantages tabulated. The book is extremely well supported by exercises and the accompanying CD , and was well liked by our students...The book could also be a useful stepping stone to more advanced techniques in modeling or diagnostic test research but does not go into sufficient detail in the application of advanced tools such as Monte Carlo simulation to be used in isolation.

Clinical Cases in Pediatric Dentistry 1st Edition, Amr M. Moursi

Wiley-Blackwell's "Clinical Cases" series is designed to recognize the centrality of clinical cases to the profession by providing actual cases with an academic backbone. Clinical Cases in Pediatric Dentistry applies both theory and practice to real-life pediatric dentistry cases in a clinically relevant format. This unique approach supports the new trend in case-based and problem-based learning, thoroughly covering topics ranging from infant oral health to complex pulp therapy. Highly illustrated in full color, Clinical Cases in Pediatric Dentistry's format fosters independent learning and prepares the reader for case-based examinations.

The book presents actual clinical cases, accompanied by academic commentary, that question and educate the reader about essential topics in pediatric dentistry. Each chapter's progression from common to increasingly challenging clinical cases enables the reader to build their skills, aiding the ability to think critically and independently.

Clinical Cases in Pediatric Dentistry's case-based format is particularly useful for pre-doctoral dental students, post-graduate residents and pediatric dentists preparing for Board examinations. The book will also appeal to students and their faculty in pediatric dentistry departments. It will be of interest to practicing pediatric dentists and family dentists as well.

This is a must get and read for anyone who is going to take the oral board exam in pediatric dentistry.
I felt that it helped me to get a mind set and self test myself.

I read it cover to cover and would recommend this to anyone who would like to take the oral boards.

Surgical Complications in Oral Implantology: Etiology, Prevention, and Management 1st Edition, Louie Al-Faraje

This exceptional new book is designed as a self-instruction guide to the diagnosis, management, and prevention of surgery-related complications in implant dentistry. It functions in two ways: First, it is a valuable resource for the implant surgeon seeking practical and succinct information about how to manage a complication in an emergency setting; and second, it can be read from cover to cover as a primer on implant surgery, from the initial consultation and treatment planning through the restorative phase of treatment. Besides addressing pre-, intra-, and postoperative implant surgery complications, the book also includes a comprehensive treatment-planning protocol that allows for the early detection of potential surgical complications and how to avoid them. Early detection of complications that are amenable to rescue therapies may reverse the fate of a failing implant or a bone-grafting procedure. Invaluable for the novice and experienced implant surgeon alike.

Dr Al-Faraje did an excellent job with this book ! I had some pretty comprehensive implant training, and I was getting this book solely to fill in the gaps in the event of a complication pre- or post surgery. This book does that part well. What I didn't expect was the overall review of proper surgical techniques and anatomy that you get as well. It is full of practical advice and guidelines that help in planning surgeries. A good buy for this type of book.

Medical Emergencies in the Dental Office 6th Edition, Stanley F. Malamed DDS

This full-color text prepares dental professionals to promptly and proactively recognize and manage medical emergencies that may occur in the dental office. It details how to anticipate potential emergencies and what resources must be on hand to deal effectively with these situations. The book is arranged in eight sections concentrating on topics such as prevention of emergencies through patient evaluation (medical history) and specific types of more common emergencies that practitioners may encounter.

This is a comprehensive book of medical emergencies seen by dental professionals. This is the fourth edition; the third was published in 1987. The purpose is to stimulate dental professionals to better manage medical emergencies. This book would be ideal as the textbook for a course or continuing education seminar in medical emergencies; it would be a valuable office reference as well. The stated audience is any person in the dental team providing patient care. The book is more appropriate for the dentist or dental student. Stanley Malamed, author of the three previous editions, is considered the leading authority on this subject. This well-organized, usable reference book is organized according to clinical symptoms, and flow sheets are used to emphasize this approach. Many of the tables could be used on a daily basis in the dental office. The author has continued to use up-to-date references and tables. Billed as a chairside reference, it would best be used as a textbook for a course on medical emergencies. The author continues to keep one of the best textbooks in clinical dentistry current and extremely usable. This is a must-have book for all dental practitioners.

This is the definitive textbook on medical emergencies in the dental office.

Dentists do not get a comprehensive medical education simply because there is no time for such a detailed education in the 4+ years of dental school. This book fills in the gap for the dental practitioner. The book is organized in such a fashion so that the dental staff learns to recognize a dental emergency early, and then according to specific algorithms, the appropriate treatment is rendered (until emergency staff arrives). Keeping the patient alive until emergency care arrives is the primary duty of the dental staff. Too many dentists buy an emergency kit full of emergency drugs (that they don't perhaps know how to use properly), yet somehow feel they are covered from liability. Having an emergency kit and not knowing how to use it actually creates more liability for the dental office.

This is a book that every dental professional should examine page by page from cover to cover until a firm understanding of recognizing medical emergencies is ingrained. I bought this copy so that I could review it each year, as one loses knowledge that is not used. Since medical emergencies (thankfully) do not happen each week or month, knowledge of medical emergency treatment slowly slips away like a leaky sieve. It has to be bolstered regularly, and fortunately, this is the book that the dental professional can rely upon to recognize dental/medical emergencies, and then render appropriate treatment. Once mastered, this book'sinformation will give the dentist and his/her staff confidence in treating virtually all medical emergencies that could happen in the dental environment. Dr. Stanley Malamed is the authority in this field, and his book is an absolute essential for every dental office. Better to have this book than a kit full of emergency medications!

This unique book is a rapid source of practical information for students, practicing dentists, and researchers who wish to expand their knowledge base on this important topic.

Travell and Simons' Trigger Point Flip Charts 1st Edition, Janet Travell

Volumes 1 and 2 of Drs. Travell and Simons' Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction: The Trigger Point Manual have been hailed as the definitive references on myofascial pain and locating trigger points. Now all the upper and lower extremity pain patterns and their corresponding trigger points are clearly illustrated on convenient flip charts, ideal for patient education.

The trigger point spiral bound charts have the same diagrams of trigger points and referred pain patterns as the Travell & Simons 2 volume set, Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction: The Trigger Point Manual -- Volumes 1 and 2. They are grouped by major body sections for quick review and have references to the more detailed information in the manuals for ease in looking up additional information. They can be set up in an examination/treatment room to use for explanations to a client or for quick reference by the practioner. No need to fumble through pages of the manuals to find trigger points or referred pain locations, just turn to the chart page for the specific section of the body that the pain is located in and there is the necessary information. Because of their portability these are a great reference for therapists who travel off sight or instructors teaching in assorted locations. An excellent compliment to the 2 volume set.

The charts are extremely well done. They have a collapsible tripod base for easy reference as you work your trigger points. Although the price seemed a little steep, it was worth every penny. The charts are somewhat waterproofed, seemingly covered with a thin plastic coating-able to withstand splashes and be wiped clean...not able to withstand being soaked in water. I highly recommend them. They should not, however, be used as an alternative to a professional massage therapist or chiropractor.

Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction: The Trigger Point Manual; Vol. 1. The Upper Half of Body 2nd Edition, David G. Simons

This Second Edition presents introductory general information on all trigger points and also detailed descriptions of single muscle syndromes for the upper half of the body. It includes 107 new drawings, a number of trigger point release techniques in addition to spray and stretch, and a new chapter on intercostal muscles and diaphragm.

Updates the 1983 edition to mark the transition of the trigger point concept from a syndrome of unknown etiology to an experimentally established neuromuscular disease entity. Also addresses the close interaction between myofascial trigger points and articular dysfunctions at nearly every point examined. Covers pain in the head and neck; upper back, shoulder, and arms; forearms and hands; and torso. Assumes readers to be health care professionals or students who are well trained, or intend to be, in muscle anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, necessary palpitation skills, and recognizing and resolving perpetuating factors.

The relationship of Myfacial pain and Fibromisyalgia are confusing to many medical providers. This book explains the relationship in great detail. Though there are some errors in the book, the pages listing Quadratus Lamborum could not be found in the upper extremity book. The Technique to avoid pneumothorax is excellent. That alone will avoid a lot of headaces. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ALL PRACTIONERS.

Peterson's Principles of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery 3rd Edition, Michael Miloro

Peterson's Principles of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery third edition, encompasses a wide range of diverse topics making it a unique text amongst the medical and dental specialties. The purpose of this concise, easy-to-read two-volume text is to provide an authoritative and currently referenced survey of the specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. It contains the necessary information for clinicians and is an ideal reference text for preparation for board certification in the specialty.

I purchased this book as soon as it was released and was very happy with the purchase. I used the 2nd edition of Peterson's almost daily during my residency and this edition is an improvement on an already excellent text. It is now full color and some of the chapters (TMJ) that I didnt like in the 2nd edition have been re-written by new authors. I would recommend this text for all residents, especially those early on in residency. Its a great text to read every night. I am no longer in residency but find this book to be useful whenever I have a clinical question I want to lookup and read more about. I also have some other texts, a single volume and a three volume series, and find this two volume series to be my go-to text.

Netter's Head and Neck Anatomy for Dentistry 2nd Edition, Neil S. Norton PhD

Netter’s Head and Neck Anatomy for Dentistry, by Neil S. Norton, PhD, uses more than 600 full-color images from the Netter Collection to richly depict all of the key anatomy that’s relevant to clinical practice. This new edition takes your knowledge further than ever with more Netter illustrations; addition of over 20 cone beam CT images; new chapters on the upper limbs, thorax, and abdomen; and more than 100 multiple-choice questions. Whether for your dental anatomy course, board review, or as a handy reference in your dental office, this concise, visual guide is an excellent anatomy atlas and quick reference for students and professionals in dentistry and dental hygiene.

While providing readers with important images from the Netter Collection, the book supplements the art with important factual information teaching and explaining anatomic details. It marries form with function. While not at the level of a complete anatomy textbook, this serves as a worthy primary source for students, and would also be an excellent resource in the dissection laboratory. The additional factual information is concise, complete, and easily accessible. Of particular excellence is the clinical correlation section found at the end of each regionally organized chapter. The images (many clinical) here are very helpful and assist students in solidifying the anatomic concepts. It provides a memorable schema for the student to frame information. If there is any glaring shortcoming, it would likely be the compact size of the book. With all the outlines and tables, this book would be a bit less crowded given more space.

This is an excellent resource for dental students. Since students are typically required to purchase an anatomy atlas, this seems like a good all-around resource. It is packed with useful information, and has excellent corresponding images. The clinical correlations help with the mastery of complex material, and will likely be a useful resource for many years following graduation. I highly recommend it, and will be steering my dental students toward it.

Fundamentals of Periodontal Instrumentation and Advanced Root Instrumentation 7th Edition, Jill S Nield-Gehrig RDH MA

The seventh edition of Peridontal Instrumentationand Advanced Root Instrumentation continues in the tradition of bringing faculty and students everything they need to understand instrumentation and put knowledge into practice. Taking a highly visual, step-by-step approach, this title is an easy-to-use guide to learning this crucial component of dental hygiene. No other text offers such an array of features and topics, all presented by one of the most well-known authors in the dental hygiene field.

This new edition combines a focus on currency, with updated content to reflect new technologies and regulations in this field, as well as coupling the text with the robust and valuable ancillaries you have come to expect from Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins' dental hygiene products.

It has alot of great information in it. It takes you through all of your instruments step by step. For some parts it has a right and left handers section. Being left-handed, this is great for me. However, I would not say I'm hard on my books, but because this is spiral bound, no matter how hard I try pages keep getting partly torn out and the cover is bent up terrible. I bought it brand new, have had it one semester, and it is decrepit. For such a large book, I wish they would have come up with a much better way to bind it.

Sedation: A Guide to Patient Management 5th Edition, Stanley F. Malamed DDS

Combining essential theory with “how-to” technical instruction, this concise guide is the leading reference for basic techniques in sedation and anxiety control in the dental office. The latest guidelines from the ADA and the American Society of Anesthesiologists keep you up-to-date with the latest medical standards. Content on patient management for pediatric, geriatric, physically compromised, and medically compromised patients helps you successfully treat any patient population.

This is the 4th edition of a popular textbook presently used by many dental schools in North America. For this edition, Dr. Malamed enlisted the help of Dr. Morris Clark, who co-authored the section on inhalational sedation, as well as Dr. Kenneth Reed, who upgraded the section on medically compromised patients. In addition to the improvements engendered by these co-authors, many of the illustrations and diagrams have been updated, and overall the new edition is superior to the third edition. The primary target audiences are pre- and post-doctoral dental students wishing to learn more about sedation and anxiety control. Increasingly, other medical practitioners such as podiatrists, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, and even gastroenterologists are performing office sedation and they too would find this book very useful.

This is a very good book for the clinician who wants to gain an understanding of proper patient management for the sedated patient, rescue breathing for the over-sedated, and how to properly monitor your sedated patient. This is not the book for a person who wants to do just conscious sedation though. It does review conscious sedation, but not very thoroughly. I recommend this book to anyone wishing to increase their understanding of how to manage your patient during sedation as a whole.

Functional Occlusion: From TMJ to Smile Design 1st Edition, Peter E. Dawson DDS

This book uses an interdisciplinary approach to explain the origin of and possible solutions to many different occlusal problems. Dr. Peter E. Dawson guides the reader along the way providing balanced explanations of theory and technique. He also debunks many popular misconceptions through practical discussion of their origins and the deficiencies of the arguments behind them. Different sides of many philosophies are presented while guiding the reader to the most functional and esthetic solution to various occlusal situations. Hundreds of full-color photographs, illustrations, and diagrams show aspects of the masticatory system, the epidemiology of occlusal problems, and procedures for finding the ideal occlusion. Whether the reader is a general dentist or a specialist, they will find this book applicable to their treatment methods and philosophies.

I've attended over 130 hours of continuing education classes at the Dawson Academy. And, essentially, this book is the teachings of the core concepts of the Dawson philosophy. If you can't afford to spend tens of thousands of dollars like I did attending his center, then this book comes as a close second. The golden nugget of the dawson philosophy is that form follows function. The book is well illustrated with copious amounts of color photos, diagrams and illustrations. I understand that Dr. Dawson did some of the illustrations himself which are fair. I guess I can be a little picky since I have a Master's degree in medical illustration as well as in dentistry. I refer to this book consistently to refresh my memory from the courses I've taken and I also pick up something new each time I read it. The only chapters that I don't pay much attention to are the ones that refer to Dr. Piper's system of classification on TMJ derangements. I tend to refer instead to Dr. Okeson's text book on TMD disorders which is a simpler system for the general dentist. I feel I would have to attend a few of Dr. Piper's course before I felt comfortable using his system. In a nutshell, this is probably Dr. Dawson's final gift to the dental community as he enters his twilight years. He is one of the living legends that I have the greatest respect for. His philosophy ties in well with other master dentists such as Dr. Frank Spear, Dr. John Kois, and Dr. Terry Tanaka.

Well, I have to say that this book has changed my whole practice since I bought it. I'll tell you what: we better have a philosophy to follow in order to treat our patients into a comprehensive approach. We better understand what's behind patient's dental problems in order to fix them and most important, to prevent them from recurring. Dr. Dawson has decades of experience and you're gonna see the results on a daily basis. I can't see a better approach out there for the dentists to treat their patients in a very predictable manner. It doesn't matter if you're a Specialist or a General Dentist. No more guessing on what you're doing! It's a must-have. Trust me.

Essential Neuroscience 2nd Edition, Allan Siegel

As burgeoning research advances the field of neuroscience, instructors face the formidable challenge of imparting this ever-increasing and heterogenous body of information to students. Essential Neuroscience, Second Edition is the coherent, balanced solution.

Rated outstanding with highest 5-star ranking in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings.

This highly acclaimed second edition covers fundamental neuroscience topics, integrating essential information with clinical and physiological considerations, providing students with multiple opportunities for review and self-testing, and presenting the latest relevant developments in neuroscience.

Proven building-block approach preferred by faculty and students alike.

Beginning with the building block of neuroscience, the neuron, the text unfolds the story of human brain function. From analysis of a single neuron, the authors enlarge the discussion to neuronal communication; guide us through the essentials of spinal cord and brain anatomy; detail the sensory, motor, and integrative systems; and finally illustrate the most complex functions and dysfunctions of the nervous system. This stepwise, basic-to-complex approach is the synthesis of 30 years of teaching experience and improves student performance on exams.

The field of neuroscience experienced a major developmental explosion over the past few decades, most of which was related to the extensive acquisition of information from molecular biology, radiology, and neurology linked to the clinical presentation of patients with diverse neurological conditions.

As with most neuroscience books, this one uses a progressive systematic approach that includes the subdivisions of the nervous system, the diverse embryologic developmental steps of the brain and spinal cord, and basic neurovascular anatomy. Also in common with other neuroscience books, there is little explanation of the embryology of intracranial vessels and how variations and neurovascular syndromes should be approached and understood. A unique feature of the book is its correlation with easy Internet access and up-to-date information on basic science clinical correlations. However, it is hard to determine the necessity of a revised first edition. How much more information is presented? Is the manner in which the information is presented more effective for busy students getting ready for the USMLE exams? In my view, the answer to those questions is not certain, ditto the need for a revision.

Fundamentals of Fixed Prosthodontics 4th Edition, Herbert T. Shillingburg

An introduction to fixed partial dentures and cast metal, metal- ceramic, and all-ceramic restorations, for students and practitioners. Discusses fundamentals of treatment planning, occlusion, and tooth preparation and details the use of specific techniques and instruments, in chapters on articulation of casts, fixed partial denture configurations, preparations for various types of crowns and restorations, investing and casting, and pontics and edentulous ridges. Includes detailed b&w diagrams. This third edition reflects the latest advances in materials, equipment, and techniques.

This is the third edition of this basic fixed prosthodontics reference textbook. Faithful to its beginnings, it contains schematic drawings rather than photographs to graphically illustrate concepts. The purpose is to serve as an introduction to the area of restorative dentistry dealing with fixed partial dentures and cast metal, metal ceramic, and all ceramic restorations. It is meant to provide the background knowledge needed by the novice as well as be a refresher for the practitioner or graduate student. The book is primarily meant for dental students, and secondarily for graduate residents. The content is divided into 28 chapters covering background knowledge of a multitude of aspects pertinent to fixed prosthodontics. Treatment planning, occlusion, articulators and records, tooth preparation, provisionalization, impressions, laboratory procedures from working cast fabrication to soldering techniques, are covered. Much needed chapters on esthetic, all-ceramic restorations, and resin-bonded fixed partial dentures are also presented. Many chapters have been modified to adapt to today's practice, a few deleted, and many added to cover particularly active aspects of dental research (cements and restorative materials, etc.). Additional references are included in the preface, directing the reader to additional specialized texts. Many of the latest developments are covered. This reference book will prove valuable for dental students as a strong base of fundamental information in fixed prosthodontics. Dental school libraries would also benefit from adding this book to the available repertoire.

This is the classic text book on the subject. Get-to-the-point line drawings efficiently and succintly convey their concepts. The text is excellently well-written, with sentences that, unlike those in the vast majority of other dental/medical textbooks, impart to the studier an understanding of the material that even a neophyte would consider comprehensive and intuitive.

Essential Clinical Anatomy 4th Edition, Keith L. Moore MSc PhD FIAC FRSM FAAA

Essential Clinical Anatomy, Fourth Edition presents the core anatomical concepts found in Clinically Oriented Anatomy, Sixth Edition in a concise, easy-to-read, and student-friendly format. This streamlined book that includes clinical Blue Boxes, surface anatomy, and medical imaging is an excellent review for the larger text and an ideal primary text for shorter medical courses and/or health professions courses with brief coverage of anatomy. The Fourth Edition features a modified layout with new and improved artwork. The clinical Blue Boxes are now grouped to reduce interruption of text and are categorized with icons to promote easier comprehension of clinical information. Expanded chapter introductory material includes Clinical Objectives and references to online case studies. A companion website includes fully searchable online text, interactive cases, USMLE-style questions, and clinical Blue Box video podcasts. Online faculty resources include an Image Bank and a Question Bank.

Anatomy is always difficult to learn. With this book it's not just easy, it's interesting! With all the blue boxes giving clinical correlations, you'll always find that anatomy is really important to know and enjoyable to learn. The book manages to give everyday applications of anatomy and also features the surface anatomy pink boxes. In addition, it is very consice. Get it!

They got the title correct. This book is ESSENTIAL! This is the condensed version of Clinically Oriented Anatomy. The diagrams and pictures are taken straight from the bigger text, as well as almost ALL of the chapter material. It looks so much smaller because the font and pictures are a little smaller. They've taken out some fluff to help us keep our sanity. If you've never looked in either book, let me teach you of the beauty of the blue box. You will live by the blue box. These blue boxes contain clinical correlations. They bridge the gap between Gross Anatomy pieces-parts and clinical presentation. This is very very important if your Gross Anatomy class exams contain thinking questions and not simply "what is this structure?" Many of my exam questions have been straight from the blue box. The newest edition also contains a CD-ROM by Grant. It's a great interactive study tool. If you're getting the new Grant's Atlas, you'll probably get doubles of this CD-ROM. My advice is to get a cheaper slightly older version of Grant or Netter Atlas (things haven't changed too much in the past few years) the new Moore Essentials, Grant's Dissector (new or older), and Netter Flash Cards. Sounds like a lot of money, but you're saving on the atlas, the dissector, and the Essentials because it's definitely cheaper than the full "Clinically Oriented Anatomy." Good luck in Gross!

Essentials of Health Behavior: Social and Behavorial Theory in Public Health 1st Edition, Mark Edberg

Health promotion, education, and prevention programs ultimately focus on changing health behavior. Most of these programs rely on a body of knowledge about what motivates and influences human behavior. In order to understand why people behave in healthy (or unhealthy) ways, we must first understand-why do people do what they do? Essentials of Health Behavior provides a broad introduction to the theoretical base used for most behavioral interventions in public health today. The text explores the general body of theory from the disciplines of psychology, sociology, and anthropology to understand and explain human behavior-as well as the contexts for behavior-and introduces the reader to the ways in which theory is applied to prevention and intervention efforts in the United States and around the world.

Features: Filled with real-life examples through which the reader will learn about a range of practical health promotion efforts, including smoking, cancer, cardiovascular disease, HIV/AIDS, maternal and child health, youth violence, and obesity. Uses language that is lively and accessible making it the perfect text for the beginning public health student. Each chapter concludes with questions to engage the reader in further reflection of the topics presented. A dedicated website provides additional resources for the instructor including PowerPoints, test questions, and an instructor's manual. As part of the Essential Public Health series, Essentials of Health Behavior provides all the necessary tools to make informed judgments about how to assess a public health or social problem, implement a program, and measure the results.

Contemporary Orthodontics 5th Edition, William R. Proffit DDS PhD

Now in full color, Contemporary Orthodontics, 5th Edition is a practical resource with a long tradition of excellence. Line drawings and more than 1,000 new color images illustrate concepts more clearly than ever. This book includes detailed information on diagnosis, treatment planning concepts, related problems or controversies, and current treatment procedures, including the role of orthodontics in comprehensive treatment of patients with multiple problems.

This book could well be called "An Encyclopedia of Contemporary Orthodontics" because of its thoroughness both of text and illustrations. The book introduces even the uninitiated to the full range of orthodontic understanding and treatment. However, once past the early chapters, the depth and complexity of the subject become evident and the casual reader will realize that this is an upper level text requiring a background in orthodontics as well as in general dentistry. The authors have used pictures and comparisons to great advantage and the use of color in noting different sections adds interest and clarity to the pages. The previous edition was published in 2000 and this edition has fewer chapters but nine more pages, so it is still heavy.

This is intended as a textbook for dental students and dentists as well as an in-depth resource for full time students of orthodontics, whether still in residency or in practice. The reputation of the authors allows readers and clinicians to proceed with confidence. The material is presented in a clear and precise manner and with a natural progression. Although, in general, the book meets the authors' objectives, it is incomplete in discussing and showing patients with the mixed dentition, having only one lateral photograph of a patient in Chapter 12.

The book covers a full range of topics in orthodontics, presenting them in an orderly fashion. The sections on growth and development, diagnosis and treatment planning, and biomechanics are particularly good. I would have liked some discussion on "model surgery" and multidisciplinary treatment and greater elaboration on the preadolescent. The photographs are of excellent quality. The radiographs on page 104 are an exception, although, by their very nature, they are hard to reproduce to the extent necessary for interpretation. A glossary is unnecessary, considering the intended audience. Another item I consider archaic is the inclusion of photographs of a patient with full bands undergoing Begg treatment.

Mosby's Review for the NBDE, Part II 1st Edition, Mosby

Mosby's Review for the NBDE, Part II is the perfect study companion for dental students who have passed Part I of the National Dental Board Exam and are preparing for Part II. This complete exam review provides crucial, current information on each of the major disciplines covered in Part II of the NBDE, including Endodontics, Operative Dentistry, Oral/Maxillofacial Surgery & Pain Control, Oral Diagnosis, Orthodontics & Pediatric Dentistry, Patient Management, Periodontics, Pharmacology, and Prosthodontics. Material is presented in a concise, convenient outline format and arranged according to the specifications of the NBDE, utilizing detailed content points and supported by informative examples and illustrations.

I just received my scores for part II and I passed with a relatively high score. Didn't get a 90, but I haven't heard of anyone in my class who has with the new test format. I studied this book in its entirety and also reviewed a few sections of the dental decks and the old ASDA released exams. This book was by far the best resource. There were questions on the exam that I wouldn't have known the answers to if not for this book. The Mosby review was recommended by a friend, and I am SO glad I used this for studying versus the First Aid review book. I used the First Aid review book for part I and found it helpful, so I bought it for part II also thinking it would be the best thing to use. There is no comparison between this book and the First Aid book in terms of content, as this book is much more thorough. It is also very well formatted. I would definitely recommend it to anyone taking NDBE part II.

Hundreds and hundreds of questions and answers to help you ace the NBDE Part I!

No other resource gives you the practice questions you need to prepare for the NBDE Part I like First Aid Q&A for the NBDE Part I. The 800 questions focus on what you most need to know in order to pass the exam and include detailed explanations for each answer choice.

The facts are good, but I just don't like how it's formatted. Maybe it's just me, but it's more geared towards memorization of material. If you don't mind the way it's written, then use this. Decks are a little better in explaining things. What I used the most was dentEssentials: High-Yield NBDE Part I Review (Kaplan Dentessentials), Dental Decks Part 1 2009-2010 (National Boards Dental Exam), and Biochem for the Boards. I would def recommend decks, biochem for the boards, and either dentessentials or first aid (depending on what format of writing you like). I did well (took it before P/F and got 91) so feel free to ask me any questions!

Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology 3rd Edition, Brad W. Neville

Be prepared to diagnose and manage any condition you encounter in your practice! This bestselling reference gives you direct access to a complete range of full-color clinical images and patient radiographs that illustrate the differentiating characteristics of lesions in the oral and maxillofacial region. Significantly revised and updated content throughout this edition brings you the latest information on the etiology, clinical features, histopathology, treatment, and prognosis of each disease entity, as well as cutting-edge topics such as bisphosphonate osteonecrosis, the oral complications associated with methamphetamine abuse, solitary fibrous tumors, gene mutation, and plasminogen deficiency.

In dental school there are books you buy to pass the class, and books you plan on using after you graduate. I have a feeling this book will end up serving both purposes. I've spent a fair amount of time reading this text for the several path courses we've taken so far, and I am glad I will have this reference when I am practicing.

This seems like a very comprehensive path book. It has excellent clinical photos, although it would always be nice to see a couple more pictures in path books to see other presentations of a lesion. The text is well written and informative.

I have no experience with other pathology books, but this book is comprehensive enough that I don't anticipate a need to. I'd recommend this book to students and clinicians. Hope this review was helpful. Let me know if you have any questions.

Travell & Simons' Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction: The Trigger Point Manual 2nd Edition, David G. Simons & Janet G. Travell

The Triggger Point Manuals are the definitive texts on myofascial medicine. Myofascial medicine impacts every practitioner of medicine. At least half of the patients in any general practice have myofascial trigger points. This book should not be on your shelves--it should be in your hands! If doctors, nurse practitioners, dentists and physical therapists knew how this book could impact their practice and their patients' lives, the publishers would not be able to keep up with the demand for it. This book carefully explains the difference between fibromyalgia and myofascial pain syndrome, with new findings on the nature of trigger points. The trigger points of the upper body are explained, with their referral patterns, as well as why they can occur, and what to do about them. Every minute you spend with this book will be worth the time.

Janet Travell MD and David Simons MD spent a lifetime studying the patterns and treatment of muscular and soft tissue pain in patients. It is a specialty in itself, and provides an amazingly detailed review of anatomy. These books are the bible on the subject written by the "mother" and "father" of the specialty. There will hardly be a day in the professional life of a busy primary care practitioner, rheumatologist, orthopedist, neurologist, physiatrist or physical therapist when these books will not be used. The more one knows of this field, the more revelations one gets into those difficult chronic pain patients. The etiology and muscular complexity of the huge field of "tension headache" syndromes now become clear. With these books you will have the tools to diagnose and treat effectively (usually dramatically) the entire spectrum of myofascial pain from head to toe, muscle by muscle. Why do so few physicians know of this vital area of medicine?
