Fundamentals of Fixed Prosthodontics 4th Edition, Herbert T. Shillingburg

An introduction to fixed partial dentures and cast metal, metal- ceramic, and all-ceramic restorations, for students and practitioners. Discusses fundamentals of treatment planning, occlusion, and tooth preparation and details the use of specific techniques and instruments, in chapters on articulation of casts, fixed partial denture configurations, preparations for various types of crowns and restorations, investing and casting, and pontics and edentulous ridges. Includes detailed b&w diagrams. This third edition reflects the latest advances in materials, equipment, and techniques.

This is the third edition of this basic fixed prosthodontics reference textbook. Faithful to its beginnings, it contains schematic drawings rather than photographs to graphically illustrate concepts. The purpose is to serve as an introduction to the area of restorative dentistry dealing with fixed partial dentures and cast metal, metal ceramic, and all ceramic restorations. It is meant to provide the background knowledge needed by the novice as well as be a refresher for the practitioner or graduate student. The book is primarily meant for dental students, and secondarily for graduate residents. The content is divided into 28 chapters covering background knowledge of a multitude of aspects pertinent to fixed prosthodontics. Treatment planning, occlusion, articulators and records, tooth preparation, provisionalization, impressions, laboratory procedures from working cast fabrication to soldering techniques, are covered. Much needed chapters on esthetic, all-ceramic restorations, and resin-bonded fixed partial dentures are also presented. Many chapters have been modified to adapt to today's practice, a few deleted, and many added to cover particularly active aspects of dental research (cements and restorative materials, etc.). Additional references are included in the preface, directing the reader to additional specialized texts. Many of the latest developments are covered. This reference book will prove valuable for dental students as a strong base of fundamental information in fixed prosthodontics. Dental school libraries would also benefit from adding this book to the available repertoire.

This is the classic text book on the subject. Get-to-the-point line drawings efficiently and succintly convey their concepts. The text is excellently well-written, with sentences that, unlike those in the vast majority of other dental/medical textbooks, impart to the studier an understanding of the material that even a neophyte would consider comprehensive and intuitive.
